how does a jet engine work

Starter is malfunctioning on my ford tractor. I was told it was the bendix is this the same thing as drive?

It is a 1955 ford 820 the starter spins but does not engage with flywheel. I take that to mean the drive on the starter is not coming out and lockin in with the flywheel. several people have to told me it is the bendix are we talking about the same

Drive or bendix is the same thing, and other answer is wrong it is not the lever that "throws" the bendix or drive into action. Try turning the engine a bit with a wrench as you could also have a bad flywheel ring gear. good luck
